On 23 February, ISO (Italian Studies at the University of Oxford) hosted an online book launch for Italiani che lasciano l’Italia/ Italians Leaving Italy by Marco Alberio and Fabio Berti. The event was held on Tuesday Feb. 23  12:15-1:30pm.

The book is about the current and ongoing emigration of young Italians into the rest of Europe and North America. The authors Marco Alberio (Università degli Studi di Bologna/Université du Québec à Rimouski) and Fabio Berti (Università di Siena) have compiled accounts of Italians who have emigrated out of Italy in search for desirable work opportunities. Using these accounts of the expectations and successes as well as difficulties and failures of new Italian emigrants, they discuss emigration that produces integration into skilled labour markets and emigration that ends up generating low-skilled and underpaid work.

This subject is especially important as between 2009 and 2019 Italian presence abroad increased by 70%, and Italy currently ranks 9th in the world. Exploring the lived experience of people who have emigrated, should give some perspective on the national brain drain.
