Organist of Florence’s Duomo Lucia Baldacci Performs in NYC
The official organist of the “Duomo” of Florence (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower), Lucia Baldacci, is performing at New York City’s Christ and St. Stephen’s Church on February 28, 2015. The concert complements the Donatello exhibition at the Museum of Biblical Art – both providing New Yorkers with Florentine gems. (See “Sculpture in the Age of Donatello” Premieres at the MOBIA, NYC from February 18,2015).
Lucia Baldacci, a native Florentine, has been the Cathedral’s organist since 2010. She also performs at the Santa Maria Maggiore and the historic Orsanmichele. She founded the Summer Organ Festival, L’Organo: Voce dell’Anima, in 2009. In 2012, she founded and curated the Misericordia in Musica festival.
Her musical education began with the piano at age seven; Baldacci went on to study with Alberto Alinari at the Cesena Conservatory, graduating in harpsichord, piano, organ and organ composition from the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory of Florence. She is also a renowned medieval specialist, countertenor, art historian and organist of the Duomo of Florence.
The musical selection is inspired by Brunelleschi’s famous Duomo including works by Frescobaldi, Zipoli, Dufay and others. The pieces were selected to evoke the magnificent architecture and spirituality of Florence’s Cathedral.
The performance is on Saturday, February 28th at Christ and St. Stephen’s Church on 122 West 69th Street. Her husband and art historian Giovanni Guidetti is presenting a lecture on the Duomo’s design prior to the concert.
