On March 21st, 2022, Italian Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family Elena Bonetti traveled to New York to visit the NYU Casa Italiana.  After visiting a local Italian-American memorial site, Minister Bonetti visited the 19th century NYU household where she gave a speech on the importance of universities, noting them as “workshops where the future is shaped.” The Minister also highlighted human rights issues and how they should be safeguarded everywhere in our world. Speaking on the importance of universities in this pivotal time, she remarked that society’s work is guided by “research, education, and dialogue” and that “it is our responsibility to unlock their potential to build a better future and pave the way for a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development.” Minister Bonetti then took questions from the audience to speak with NYU students, staff, and alumni on experiences and thoughts regarding the importance of their foundational educative experiences.

Taking office in September of 2019, Minister Bonetti has helped to lead movements of equal opportunity and spark difficult conversations such as gender equality, economic growth, and more effective policies since the pandemic began.
