Italy Appoints Mariangela Zappia Representative to the United Nations
In August 2018, Mariangela Zappia took office as Italy’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. With her appointment marks a historic moment for Italy as she is the first woman to hold the position. This historic fact is not the only remarkable aspect about Zappia as she has over three decades of experience as a diplomat. From 1990-1993 she served as the Vice Consul of the Consulate General in New York and First Counselor to the Italian Mission to the United Nations. This is not the first Representative Zappia has broken new ground in international relations. From 2014-16 she served as the Permanent Representative of Italy to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization the first woman to do so. When describing her goals for her new office Zappia stated that her primary goal is to improve and maintain Italy’s commitment to human rights.
