As the “first lady” of Italian culture and education in New York, as the patron of so many cultural events and institutions and as a great friend to so many over so many years, Baroness Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimò leaves a profound legacy in all that she provided and created for Italian culture in New York. Born in 1926 in Milan, this extraordinary lady passed away on Saturday, October 17th, 2015.
Ms. Zerilli-Marimò most notably founded Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò in 1990, the home of the Department of Italian Studies at New York University and a hub of Italian studies, arts and humanities. Passionate about the diffusion and appreciation of Italian culture, especially in New York, she served as an active trustee of La Scuola Guglielmo Marconi and the National Italian American Foundation. She as also a member of the Metropolitan Opera, the Friends of La Scala New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Friends of La Pietra. She will be sorely missed.
