Etruscan Artifacts Recovered From Illegal Excavation Site in Italy
Etruscan artifacts, worth about 8.5 million euros have been recovered just 40 miles north of Rome in the Umbria region of Italy by Italian authorities. Found at an illegal excavation site, these artifacts include Etruscan urns, sarcophagi, and beauty tools and accessories. The illegal excavation site, dug up adjacent to a preexisting excavation site discovered by a farmer in 2015, was found by authorities after coming into contact with images circulating the black market. These images included photos of artifacts that looked incredibly similar to ones found at the legal excavation site, tipping off authorities that illegal excavations were happening in this area.
Italian authorities utilized phone tapping and aerial photography in order to find the location of these illegal digs and traced the activity to a local businessman. Italian police seized the land from the individuals involved in looting this site. Recovered from these illegal digs were more Etruscan sarcophagi.
The artifacts found at these sites can be dated back to the 3rd century, and provide insight into the life of the Etruscans who did not keep a wide breadth of written information regarding their daily life. As a Mediterranean trading power, the Etruscan civilization was advanced and powerful that flourished in a pre-Roman Italy.
These artifacts, now recovered and in the hands of Italian authorities, hold the potential to reveal more information about the Etruscan civilization.
