Giotto’s Frescoes bring a festive glow to Assisi at Christmas

From December 8 through the holiday season, images of Giotto’s famous frescoes adorn the façades Basilica of St Francis, the Cathedral of San Rufino, the Basilica of S. Chiara, and the Abbey of St Peter in Assisi. Giotto’s Nativity switches to a video-mapping show presenting a glimpse of the Basilica of St. Francis’ interior and frescoes by Giotto every evening at 17:00, every 30 minutes. The presented scenes are housed inside the Basilica of San Francesco and live-streamed from the Upper Church of the monumental complex. The scenes are the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Visitation, and the Adoration. The video mapping accompanies life-size statues, installations, and artistic illuminations on the buildings of the ancient town’s historic center, with stars guiding the visitors through their journey between projection sites.

The sculptures and projections of Giotto’s frescoes give vitality to the town by combining tradition and modernity with the Franciscan vision of Christmas.
