On the Italian Stage, is a two-part series of lectures hosted by Casa Italiana and  led by Laura Caparrotti (Artistic Director, Kairos Italy Theater). The series will explore the history of Italian Theater and it’s contribution to Italian society and the world theatre at large.

The first class is about what Political Theatre is and its history. Laura Caparrotti will delve into censorship and the political discourse around it. These issues span from the Renaissance to the present day. This lecture however will focus on the period between the Renaissance and the 1920s.

The second class will focus on the 1960s to the present. At the centre of this lecture will be an inquiry into why mostly male actors are creating Political theatre and if the trend has changed or not.

Art has served as a medium through which regular citizens can express their grievances and discontent with a political system that at times is out of touch with said citizens. This lecture series should give context and deepen our insights on how theatre as an artistic medium in Italy has played a role in society.
