RIP, Gina Lollobrigida, Italian Movie Icon

Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida, who first conquered the audience’s hearts in Italian cinema and later in international cinemas, died on Friday, January 16, in Rome. Born on July 4, 1927, Gina Lollobrigida gained fame for neorealist cinema and became one of the prominent actresses of her time with her beauty and talent. She created a sensation as the sex symbol of Europe and made a name for herself worldwide. Among the films in which the world-famous actress starred are Beat the Devil (1953), Crossed Swords (1954), and the Hunchback of Notre Dame (1956).

The Italian Diva won the David di Donatello three times. Nicknamed La Lollo, the actress was described as “the most beautiful woman in the world” after her performance in La Donna Più Bella del Mondo (1955). In addition to her acting career, she made waves as a photojournalist, politician, and filmmaker.

As the world mourned the death of the 95-year-old star, many famous faces paid tribute. Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano wrote on Twitter: “Farewell to a diva of the silver screen, the protagonist of more than half a century of Italian cinema history. Her charm will remain eternal.”
