Celebration of Italian Opera Singing in Verona Arena

On Friday, June 7th, a gala concert was put on at the Verona Arena in Italy to celebrate Italian opera’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. 

The concert was put on by Italy’s culture ministry, showcasing opera singers Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, and Eleonora Buratto. Also featured at the concert were dancers Roberto Bolle and Nicoletta Manni, as well as an orchestra of 160 musicians and over 300 choristers led by Riccardo Muti.

Pieces prepared and performed during the concert consisted of Arias from Guglielmo Tell, Norma, Nabucco, Macbeth, Mephistopheles, and Manon Lescaut. Puccini, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, and Giordano were also featured at the event, performing their famous opera pieces.

The event was broadcasted on Rai 1 at 8:30 reaching a large audience and introducing them to the extraordinary heritage of Italian opera and opera singing. Moving forward, the Ministry hopes to repeat events similar to this on a yearly basis, in unique and beautiful locations across Italy.
