Florence Opera House installs Alfredo Pirri’s ‘Prospettive’
The site-specific artwork Prospettive con Orizzonti of Alfredo Pirri (Cosenza, Italy; 1957), one of the prominent names in contemporary art, found its permanent place on the Florence Opera House’s roof. The installation is described as a “metaphysical archaeological site” resembling a marble quarry in which a trench has been dug for the extraction of the mineral. According to the artist, it is a sequence of full and empty forms that change color as day and night alternate, creating a horizontal chromatic and luminous succession. “The main meaning of the work,” says Pirri, “is to create a dialogue with the city on several fronts, both modern and ancient. It is a challenge to the city, in the sense of proposing a contemporary work within a moment of transition of the city itself, a transition that also concerns Italy. For me it is a satisfaction, as an artist and person: Florence is an important point of reference”.
The installation occupies 2270 meters, roofing the new auditorium of the theatre, the Sala Zubin Mehta. Donated by Emiliano Cerasi to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Theatre, the work can be visited every Sunday in January and February at 11 AM with free tours.
