MoMA Pays Tribute to Claudia Cardinale with a Retrospective
In collaboration with Cinecittà, Rome, Museum of Modern Art in New York celebrates Italian actress and women’s rights activist Claudia Cardinale’s nearly 70-year career with a retrospective featuring 23 films, 17 of which have been restored. Cinecittà Electa publishes a 200-page illustrated book dedicated to the actress, edited by the actress’ daughter Claudia Squittieri, in conjunction with the retrospective.
The 84-year-old Tunisian-born actress is a global icon, praised for her stunning beauty and the depth of her performances, which always had a touch of tenderness and wit. The retrospective begins with the restored version of Bébo’s Girl (1963) by Luigi Comencini, based on Carlo Cassolo’s novel. The screening is preceded by the unveiling of the illustrated volume Claudia Cardinale, l’indomabile, with an introduction by Cinecittà president Chiara Sbarigia. The book provides a window into the actress’s life and career, allowing readers to learn more about her fascinating personality and remarkable work.
The retrospective includes the actress’ works such as Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard and Rocco and His Brothers, Federico Fellini’s Once Upon a Time in the West and 8 ½, Mauro Bolognini’s Il Bell’Antonio, La Viaccia, Senilità, and Libera, Amore Mio!, Valerio Zurlini’s The Girl with the Suitcase, Pasquale Squitieri’s Atto di Dolore, and Marco Bellocchio’s Enrico IV. In addition, it features an assortment of international films, which includes Richard Brooks’s The Professionals, Alexander Mackendrick’s Don’t Make Waves, Manoel de Oliveira’s Gebo and the Shadow, Nadine Trintignant’s L’été prochain, and Boris Despodov’s Twice Upon a Time in the West.
The retrospective is on display from February 3 until February 21.
