NYU Casa Italiana Presents “The Myth of American Success…”
NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò presents a panel discussion on April 29 entitled, “Eppur Si Muove: The Myth of American Success: Do We Have to Leave Italy?”, featuring authors Elena A. Perazzini and Elisa Simonelli.
Perazzini is the author of Far From Us, which details the successes of eleven Italians who immigrated to the United States in the past few decades. She observes the difficulties of transitioning to a new culture and taking creating a new vocation in a foreign country. She explores the difference between 21st- and early 19th-century immigrants, paying special attention to their motivations, backgrounds and outcomes. Included in her novel are the stores of Mario Fratti, a well-known playwright; Giona Angeli, a renowned chef and resteraunteur and Dr. Giovannella Moscovici, who contributed to a Nobel Prize-winning project.
Simonelli’s The Country Where Anything is Possible includes 22 narratives on how physicians, cinematographers, scientists and other professionals have created success in Italy without the assistance of personal connections. Her book challenges the view that it is impossible to launch a prosperous career without leaving Italy.
The discussion will be moderated by Professor Antonio Monda and will be followed by cocktails and canapés at NYU’s Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimó.
Perazzini is a New York based writer with a degree in criminal law and has held many jobs since her arrival in the United States. Simonelli is a writer, journalist and former correspondent for one of Italy’s most widely viewed news programs “Porta a Porta”.
