On June 5, 2024 American Film Director, Sofia Coppola was honored at the McKim Medal Gala, hosted at Villa Aurelia in Rome.

The annual gala, established in 2005, honors individuals from the United States and Italy for their notable contributions to the arts and humanities. Considered one of Rome’s most high-profile cultural events, the gala symbolizes the strong relationship between the two countries. This year’s event coincided with both the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Rome on June 4 and the Normandy landing on June 6.

This year, the gala raised nearly 850,000 euros in support of the continued exchange of practices and ideas within the interdisciplinary community of the Academy.

This year’s recipient, Coppola, was awarded the prestigious medal for her unique style that blends feminine delicacy with ethereal, dream-like qualities, distinguishing herself from her father Francis Ford Coppola. Most notably, Coppola became the second woman and first American to win Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival for “The Beguiled,” and presented her film “Priscilla” at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.

Of the 540 participants of the event, some of the most notable attendees include Paolo Sorrentino, Marco Mengoni and Paolo Virzì, Seydou Sarr, and Moustapha Fall.

Also announced at the gala was the collaboration between the American Academy in Rome, Bvlgari, the Whitney Museum of American Art and MAXXI – the National Museum of 21st Century Arts. This partnership will provide Fellowships for an American and an Italian artist to undertake residencies at the Academy in 2025, 2027, and 2029.
