Sculptures from Milan’s Duomo show at Eataly NYC

This week the mayor of Milan is visiting New York City in preparation for Milan Expo 2015, and he is not coming empty handed. Mayor Giuliano Pisapia has arrived with precious cargo from home- priceless statues from Milan’s Duomo. Beginning October 15th, the stunning array of statues, gargoyles, spires, and pinnacles from the iconic Gothic cathedral will be on display in the Flatiron at New York’s Italian food emporium Eataly. American audiences can view the pieces at home for the very first time for the next six months during “Eataly per Duomo”, which leads up to the 2015 World Expo in Milan.

Displaying the exquisite pieces of Italian culture heritage at a food store makes perfect sense for promoting the food-themed World Expo in Milan.

“We’re doing the exhibit because Oscar Farinetti and everyone who has worked with him strongly believe in the culture and in promoting our country,” said Eataly’s top manager and Brand Ambassador Dino Borri.

The in-store exhibit will feature famous works such as the statue of Santa Lucia. A recreation of the central nave of the cathedral includes a reproduction of the famous “Madonnina,” the ethereal gold sculpture that rests high atop the Duomo in Milan. A brief description and history of the works accompanies each piece of art.

The exhibition was organized by Eataly in collaboration with Venerable Fabbrica del Duomo, a non-profit that aims to preserve the cathedral through donations. In this way, the exhibit serves as a celebration of Italian heritage in Milan for the upcoming Expo and as a major fundraising operation for the conservation of the city’s symbol.

Mayor Pisapia arrived in New York for the inauguration of the exhibit to bring the message of Expo 2015 and to explain two projects that will require support from major US cities: The International Food Policy for Milan and the Protocol on Sustainable International Food Policy (Urban Food Policy Pact), which will be signed by the mayors of other cities during the Expo. Eataly is a crucial focal point for bringing American attention to the Expo, as it is the only box office in New York authorized to sell tickets for those who wish to visit Milan next year.
